The name Saifi came into being on 6th April 1975. Saifi is a surname created for the people of those communities who are associated with tasks like blacksmith, carpentry, craftsmen, tailors, goldsmith, washerman, barber and hairdresser, furniture maker and so on. Besides, there is a large section of people who are associated with different businesses.

The people of this community have enormously contributed towards the development of the country with a huge workforce that are associated with building dams, bridges etc. and are also involved in almost every work ranging from making sharp edged weapons like knifes, blades, to making doors, windows, sofa, chairs, tables and so on and so forth.

So, in a way this community has indeed played a great role in the development of the country and its infrastructure.

But despite all these efforts, these people are still lacking behind in many ways. They don’t have the kind of facilities that are necessary to lead a good life and moreover they are being looked down upon.

So, many eminent people of this community strived to work together and worked towards finding a new name and a new identity for them and that’s how the name Saifi found its existence.

Need for a Surname:
There was a time when the people of this community felt the need for a surname. The reasons for this need were varied. Speaking of the earlier times, during British rule, they divided Indian society into high and low and encouraged them to fight against each other for their own benefit. During this time, the Zamindari System or Landordship was on peek. Even the people who belonged to the now known as Saifi society were also exploited in this high/low society differences. At that time, the need for a name for every community was necessary and the blacksmiths-carpentry were known as a community then.

Later, people from this community took to education, studied well, got good jobs and became engineers, doctors and civil servants. Now, they got the chance to mix with other class of people and at this stage, the educated felt some kind of embarrassment to give their original identity. So, at this point, people of this community started disowning their earlier surnames and took up newly created names of their own. Some of these people even disowned their families and settled away.

Suddenly, the eminent people of this community felt concerned that they will lose their original identity in this way. So, they initiated to find a common surname for the entire community, a name that everyone feels proud to use and get associated with.

Initiatives taken to find a proper surname:
A lot of efforts have been taken by many eminent personalities of this community in different cities of the country to give its people dignity and status that was due for them.

The earliest attempt was made in the year 1937 in Meerut by Mr. Matinur Rehman Saifi and Mr. Abdul Karim. This continued in 1945 in cities like Aligarh, Bulandshehar, and Fetehpur. Even in different cities of Rajesthan, M.P, Gujarat and J&K saw different personalities fighting for the same cause.

In the year 1974, Haji Abdul Hafiz (founder) and Mohd Kifayatullah along with some of their friends founded the All India Blacksmith and Carpenter Organization in Meerut to give stability to this community and to solve the problems of its people. But, unluckily the organization couldn’t get momentum here. Later, Babu Mohd Hanif Saifi Bachrayuni, Haji Abdul Hafiz and Mohd Kifayatullah took this organization to Bachrayun, where it got huge success.

Shortly, the All India Blacksmith and Carpenter Organization hold an assembly to find a surname for the community. Here under the guidance of famous Urdu reporter Mohd Usman Farkalit Saifi in Amroha the surname Saifi got recognition.

Again on 31 March 1975, Muslim blacksmith and carpenter community organized a gathering in Gulawati district of Bulandshaher under the guidance of Maulana Mohd Suleman Saabir, in the presence of Dr. Mehruddin Khan, Haji Alisher, and Mohd Yusuf Saifi. Here, it was decided that in the next gathering of the blacksmiths and carpenters to be held on 6 April 1975 in Amroha, the final surname will be fixed.

And finally, On 6 April 1975, Saifi word was taken as a surname for this community.

Origin of "Saifi" word:
Saifi word gets its relevance from the Arabic word Saif, which means sword and Saifi, means the maker of Sword. Moreover, Hajrat Abu Saif was the name of a Sahabi who was a genius at blacksmith and carpentry work. His wife had fed milk to son of prophet Mohd (pbuh) Hajrat Ibrahim, who died at an early age.

So keeping all these things in mind, this community had decided to use the surname Saifi, which the blacksmith and carpentry community adopted with great love.

Later, the name Saifi was elaborated in English as Super Artisan Industrialist Federation of India.

The founder of Saifi Title at Amroha

The founder of Saifi Title and his struggle

In the year 1974, Sri Mullah Saeed Pahalwan nickname Hathoda [hammer], an illiterate general citizen of Mohall Sarai Kohna, Amroha, felt that the members of Carpenter and blacksmith community do not have an identity in the Indian society like others have and are identified with their community title like Ansari, Beg, Mansoori etc. It gave him a kind of shock. He took a stand to bring this un-named section of Sunni Muslim society under the umbrella of a unique name. Initially, he disseminated these ideas to his friendly circle and had group discussions with his friends. Slowly the message spread to almost all members of Lohar and Badhai families in Amroha. They started having get together here and there in Amroha. Within a period of two to three months, it picked up momentum and there were a large number of meetings held at town level. The meetings witnessed greater attendance every time the meeting was held. The people of nearby villages and towns also joined Sri Mullah Saeed Pahalwan. This gave an immediate rise to the morale of the Pioneer or PILLAR (Hathoda) of the movement. Soon it touched the heights of the then district Moradabad level. Now the carpenters and blacksmith families of the entire district Moradabad were showing their lot of zeal and were willing to temporarily sacrify their jobs to give a speedy push to the movement. Mr Saeed was a very good speaker and knew how to make people follow him. He held meetings at various places in district Moradabad. He also took the people to other districts of Uttar Pradesh and spread his message into entire state. He had his many lieutenants who lectured for the purpose. During end 1974, he managed, through his deputies, to arrange meetings at various places simultaneously in the state. The personalities of Uttar Pradesh who played vital role under the wise guidance of Late Sri Mullah Saeed Pahalwan nickname Hothoda [the hammer are Sadar Ayyub Saheb [still, 2010, resides at Amroha), Janab Abdul Salam, Janab Shokat Ali, still residing at Kanth Rd Amroha, Janab Liaquat Ali of Majapota who, during this period was serving in Indian Navy and is recently retired from the rank of Commander, Indian Navy and joined Tripura State Civil Services as Secretary, Rajya Sainik Board and State Public Information Officer are amongst those who were a part and parcel of the movement. There are/were many more prominent personalities of Amroha and those of Uttar Pradesh who played a creative and result oriented role in the movement. Later during end of the year 1974 and in early 1975, states like Haryana, Punjab, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi etc also jumped in to the movement of noble cause of the community. In pursuance of unanimous vote, as desired by the Pioneer, an All India level meeting was arranged on 06 April 1975 at Station Road Amroha. All the dignitaries present in the meeting applied their sharp minds to find a suitable title for the community. A list of proposed names to assign to this community was offered. Finally in the evening of the day the word ‘SAIFI’ was agreed upon by the house. Since then this community is known with the meaningful title ‘Saifi’ which means ‘a sword’. The name Mullah Saeed Pahalwan cannot be done away with. But, alas! There are some well known Saifis who claim to be the founders. There may be many presidents on district, state and union territory level but there cannot be more than one ‘All India President’ of the community. I know Janab Mauji Khan saifi as the ‘All India President’. It is heard that there are some more personalities who claim to be the pioneer and president of this community. The existence of more than one All India president indicates to the entire world that this community needs to learn the importance of unity within the community. All members of this [Saifi] community are hereby advised to send us the works undertaken by them towards upliftment of this community and the results thereof. This will enable us to include their efforts, actions and the noble works that have helped the members of this community to rise their morale and general standard of their living and merged with the main stream of Sunni Muslims social, educational, technical and political or any other status.
